I love Jamie Ridler's
Creative Living podcasts - I listen to them each week, usually while working out. To celebrate November, she's offering up a 30-day movement challenge. This comes at the perfect time for me, because I tend to fall into the holiday season willy-nilly, abandoning my workout schedule, even though I'm running the San Antonio Rock & Roll Half Marathon in two weeks and the Austin Half in February. You'd think I'd have this figured out by now - running races pretty much demands that I follow a training plan - but somehow I
still resist that routine, especially as I'm coming up to a race and then recovering afterward. At both times I tend to do too little - I've always needed less rest than I think leading up to a race, and I don't need as much recovery time as I take afterward. My body is ready to go but my mind wants to stay home. Then I have to scramble to get semi-ready for those Austin hills. And all against the background of the holiday daze - multiple Thanksgiving celebrations for our family, shopping (ugh), Christmas parties, kids out of school, last-minute invites, several December birthdays, and of course the food, drink, and late nights.
So what does this have to do with Jamie's Movement Challenge? For me, the most important thing is that it serves as a formal, daily commitment to staying physical, so I'm going to jump into a yoga practice. I have two DVD's with seven different routines between them, from gentle stretching to vigorous sun salutations and standing poses (with plenty more DVD's available from the library) - I can do something every day, even while running and resting, improve my strength and flexibility, and set up a good habit to take through the chaos/fun of the holiday season. I'm betting the daily focus will spread to my running, which could use much more attention and discipline.
I'll be posting about my progress. And yes, I did my yoga routine today.
